Cruising on Lake Titicaca and checking out the Uros Islands

Took a boat trip out to Lake Titicaca - the world's largest highest navigable lake. While there we visited the man-made floating Uros Islands which have been inhabited by Uros Indians retreating from more powerful neighbours like the Incas. There are approx 48 of these islands, but most guided tours limit themselves to the largest ones. We stopped off at two islands: Apu Kontiki and Quechua. The first floating island contained the living quarters of an extended family, the second was a touristy island with shops, stalls and a bar.

Freddy, the head honcho on Apu Kontiki, displayed using small models, how they built the islands from totora reeds, the dominant plant which grows in the shallows of Titicaca and is a source of food, as well as the basic material for roofing, walls and boats. His wife and his sisters invited us into their huts and then displayed wares that they were selling. I took a short reed boat ride across to the next island, and was serenaded farewell by the ladies on the island in both Quechuan and Aymaran.

Back in Puno we lunched at a lovely restaurant called Incabar with a few of the group. Had the most amazing Eggs Benedict on lovely ciabatta style bread. I've been hankering for poached eggs for months, and finally I've managed to secure some. Ooh la la I was a happy camper. That evening a few of the group went to see Jack Reacher in the cinema. Having read a few of Lee Child's books I simply could not imagine Tom Cruise as the main lead and instead so I chilled out in the hotel, sorting and backing up photos - much more productive I felt!
