A Wee Stopover in Cuenca

Error
Pitchers
Intoxication
Cuenca

Cuenca was a nice little stopover before we left Ecuador for good. We sussed out a local Microbrewery and our first night there made the owners ridiculously happy - litre tankards of beer were flowing and poor Ken was on the receiving end of some tequila spiked pitchers. It turned out to be a long night, and for a small number of elite overlanders, the notion of heading to dinner was dismissed as they hunkered down for the evening. Eating is cheating you know! The nights merriment and intoxication was only brought to a close because the brewery had been cleared out of all its stock of beer.

Sightseeing around the town was the MO for the next day. We checked out the local flower market, artisan crafts and the new Cathedral. The dome towers of which are truncated due to a calculation error of the architect; if they had been raised to the planned height, the foundation would not have been able to bear the weight. Instead the towers were built to weight bearing height and so the blue and white domes are not at all visible from the front of the building, rather you have to look at it side on to see a hint of the domes. While in Cuenca I also played the highly entertaining ATM withdrawal lottery. It took me eight different machines before hitting the jackpot - I really hope my bank doesn't block my card due to the colossal number of attempts I had to try just to get a handful of cash out.
