Unwinding at a typical Argentine Estancia

Estancia
Precariously
Indulged
Chill Out

Returning back to Argentina we sidled up to a sleepy estancia near La Cumbre in order to chill out before finishing up the trip in Buenos Aires.

Days were spent mooching, ambling down to the river, finishing books, and my favourite, getting reacquainted with Malbec and top notch beef and veal.

Completely doing squat is not in my MO these days so I joined Karen and Francois on a horse-riding trip around the estancia perimeter led by our gaucho, Daniel. The horses were saddled with ridiculously huge cowhide chaps; these were necessary to protect our legs from incredibly sharp burs and thorns that reside in every single plant and tree on the ranch.

On our first night our hostess Virginia prepared a massive meat BBQ feast. Trays upon trays of succulent and tender cuts of meat circulated around the dining area. We all over-indulged as it was so good to be back in the land of delicious, and perfectly cooked, meat.

At the start of the trip we assigned ourselves the task of making a dent in the country's herd of cows, sadly, despite our best efforts, we have been beaten, there is simply too much livestock and not enough time! We have enjoyed the challenge though...

Karen celebrated her birthday while at the ranch. Kirsten was unable to get her a cake (as Karen is a coeliac) so instead we made do with a small pile of gluten-free biscuits and tried to precariously place a lighted candle into the mound. Success was achieved and Karen was only too delighted with her biscuits.

With Buenos Aires beckoning, our figure of eight route around South America is nearly complete. I'll be sad to wrap up the trip, but am looking forward to catching up with family and friends. Still, no time to get maudlin just yet, there's a bonus add-on trip to Uruguay to be enjoyed.
