Party Time in Otavalo

Ecuador
Punch
Ipiales
Celebration

Before leaving Colombia we stayed overnight in Ipiales, which has little to offer, but it is a place you inevitably end up in if crossing the border between Colombia and Ecuador. However, just outside the town is an impressive sight of Las Lajas Sanctuary, a minor neo-Gothic basilica church built inside the canyon of the Guáitara River.

Leaving beautiful Colombia behind, we set off for the Ecuadorian border and made our way to Otavalo, a largely indigenous town. Visiting this town was like stepping into a time warp. The majority of older women here still wear the traditional white embroidered blouses with flared lace sleeves and black skirts. They also have many strings of gold beads around their necks. It was a lovely quaint town, with loads of markets and again very friendly locals.

We had a huge celebration do for a few of the group in Otavalo. A joint birthday party for Mikkel, Duncan and Colin, plus sadly a leaving do for Duncan and Angela who are leaving us in Quito after travelling for the past 9.5 months. Musical instruments were located, songs were sung, speeches were made, a slideshow was displayed, a lethal homemade fruit punch was consumed, and a good time was had by all.
