Sightseeing and Salsa in Medellin

Medellin was a short stop that involved sightseeing around the city and Salsa dancing.

We arrived into Medellin mid-afternoon, had a quick look round the area we were staying in - not quite city centre, but thronged with bustling people and shops. Later that evening a large group of us went for a lovely Mexican meal. After the meal we jumped in a few taxis, that the restaurant ordered for us as the area wasn't safe enough to walk a few blocks, and headed for a popular local Salsa club. On arriving at the club it was closed (again because of Easter week) and some friendly locals recommended a nearby Rumba club instead. Cue another taxi ride, a long night, a carton of rum and progressively worse dancing. The club owners were very friendly and again ordered a taxi for us at the end of the night to ensure that we safely got back to our hotel. So far the Colombians that we have encountered have being so so friendly, and really delighted that we are visiting their country. We have got a lot of "Hey Gringo, welcome to Colombia, we love you!" comments, or similar.

Went on a tour of Medellin and started off with a panoramic view of the city from Cerro Nutibara Pueblito Paisa. Checked out the EPM building (deals with Medellin's energy) and its unusual reflexology park. You start off walking barefoot in the bamboo park, then move to a grassy area where we did foot movements, and hugged trees. Ken was particularly good at this given his practice from Christmas Eve. We then had to close our eyes and walk blindly through some wooden pillars (a sign of trusting ourselves and our instincts). Next up was a walk on top of similar pillars, all of different heights. We finished with a self foot massage in water pools and a water jet massage (all to relieve everyday stress and tension). I thoroughly enjoyed this little exercise, everyone got involved and we had a great giggle.

Checked out Plaza Botero which is surrounded with giant sculptures from a famous sculptor of the same name, who does lots of incorrectly proportioned subjects.

Took a cable car to the top of the town to get another panoramic view of the city. It was incredible to see the favela style houses and get a sneak peek into people's houses. We watched as kids played on tiny roof terraces, and women trying to dry clothes by laying them on the ground of the terraces.

A Thai restaurant was our next dinner venue and they were serving a great deal of 3 for 1 cocktails, so Mojitos, Mai Tai's, Piña Coladas and Whiskey Sours were tested. Childish behaviour rapidly ensued with wrappers and straws being used as pea shooters. Tony, Jeanne and Geoff were the main culprits. We were lucky not to get thrown out of the restaurant when a few shots went wildly astray. Luckily we decided to leave before we drew the wrath of the owners on us, and retired to a cocktail bar. There I was indecisively humming and hawing between Jello shots and an Appletini. Finally an Appletini was ordered and I got the biggest cocktail glass I have ever seen in my life - the drink was deliciously yummy and I bravely struggled through it! ;-)
